Ísfell ehf., which has itself been operating a net loft at Flatir in Vestmannaeyjar (the Westman Islands) purchased the net loft company Net ehf. in the Islands at the turn of the year. These companies have now been merged, and all of Ísfell’s operations will be in a single location at Kleifarbryggja wharf in the Friðarhöfn port. “We plan to move from Flatir and expect the entire operation to be under one roof by April 2016 at Kleifarbryggja”, says Production Manager Birkir Agnarsson. “Once the transfer has been completed, we have plans to enlarge the current building by around 530 m2, making the final size of the building 2100 m2. We are currently renovating the building, renewing the staff facilities, offices and cafeteria, and the instalment of pulley block systems for capelin and herring nets is underway. We are also establishing a well-equipped wire rope workshop as well as a store for fisheries supplies. In addition, we are completing work on a 650 m2 outdoor area that will be used as a storage area for wire rope and rockhoppers. After these changes have been made, we will be able to take seines directly from a vessel into the facilities, and the same can be said of pelagic and bottom trawls,” adds Birkir. There will be around ten employees working in Vestmannaeyjar.
Work has begun on the installation of a large pelagic trawl drum together with a pulley system that will, according to Birkir, completely alter and make all work on the maintenance and manufacture of pelagic trawls in Vestmannaeyjar more convenient and efficient. “Up until now, we have lacked proper facilities here for pelagic trawl work and a large part of the maintenance work has been done on the wharf. Once the building at Kleifarbryggja has been enlarged, there will be a 70 m trawl lane, which will make the work much easier and more efficient. It is self-evident that the work is much more efficient in a heated building with good lighting and all the necessary tools and equipment. Ísfell employees, therefore, are really looking forward to being able to offer improved services and comprehensive solutions for all types of fishing gear in Vestmannaeyjar”, says Birkir.
