Ísfell ehf. recently began operating a net-loft in Sisimiut on the west coast of Greenland. Shareholders and partners in the new company are Ísfell ehf. á Íslandi and Hanseraq Enoksen, a fisheries operator in Sisimiut who, among other things, operates the fisheries company Angunnguaq AS. The Operations Manager at Ísfell Sisimiut is Jörgen Poulsen.
Ísfell Sisimiut AS will offer fishing gear and principal operating goods for ships and fish processors, as well as a wide range of hoisting equipment and work-wear for contractors and tradesmen. The company’s range of goods can be seen on Ísfell’s website www.isfell.is.
Sisimiut is located north of the Arctic Circle and has a population of around 5,500. The harbour conditions in Sisimiut are excellent, and the port is open throughout the year. Sisimiut Harbour is Greenland’s largest unloading port for marine goods. Many of Greenland’s larger fisheries companies unload a proportion of their catch in Sisimiut, as do foreign vessels fishing in the waters off Greenland and Canada.
Ísfell has been gaining considerable knowledge of the Greenland market over the past few years and has strengthened its ties with fisheries companies there considerably. This can to some extent be traced to the fact that vessels from Greenland have increasingly been unloading their catches here in Iceland and that their companies have come to here to obtain maintenance work for their vessels. In addition, an Icelandic Consulate has been opened in Nuuk, and the Consul General, Pétur Ásgeirsson, has played an important role in disseminating information about Greenland and about business opportunities there.
With the establishment of this new company, Ísfell ehf. now operates in three countries. In addition to the operation in Greenland, Ísfell has its headquarters and seven net-lofts in Iceland as well as a subsidiary in St. John’s in Newfoundland which operates a net-loft and wholesale for fisheries companies operating vessels off the shore of Canada and Newfoundland.
